Jeanette: First Week of April Report
Hello!
It's been awhile, but don't worry.....I'm still swimming!
I worked very hard to get to 180 by spring break (28 pounds down!), then had a fantastic time in Arizona with Michelle. We ate fun food, but we kept very active. Some of the highlights for me were running a 5K...a Bubble Run! You run through colored bubbles and get all tie dyed by the end...perfect weather....LOVED IT! We also did a ton of hiking in Sedona, North Mountain night hikes, walks around the golf course, Hole in the Rock, and CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN! That one was really fun and hard. We also rode bikes to Tempe Lake--so fun. I wish I had a bike in Phoenix, and we would have done more riding! It was a perfect spring break.
Last week, when I weighed in after spring break, I was 181.4. This morning, I had a fun milestone: I was 178.0. I've lost over 30 pounds!!
This is very exciting. I feel good and everyone has noticed and commented on my weight loss. I am buying new clothes because I have shrunk out of all of my old ones.
Now, I really really want to keep losing weight and not get complacent. My original goal was 169. that is only 9 pounds away! I have a new goal: 155. This is low, a lot lower than I have ever weighed. However, it is not underweight. I think that it is very possible. I know it will take time and effort, but I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing. It's been working!!
By next week, I would like to see 175. We are supposed to have good weather next week. It's fun to have spring here. It felt so cold and dark and difficult at the beginning of the blog and the weight loss. Spring is so fun! I will close with pics from my latest adventure on Friday...the "Bo Glo" night race. I ran it with Ashlee Smart, Kori Valentine, and Emily Stromer. It's fun that a 5K isn't hard anymore! I wonder if I should start training for a 10K?
Just keep swimming! 175 here I come

You may have noticed that Michelle disappeared....it's true. She has a newer, more important blog that she's focused on right now (and I say that sincerely without any sarcasm)!
I just wanted to check in--this week I ate Idaho Pizza Company pizza at school and at Souper Salad with my family. Sometimes you have to just go with the flow, make the best choices you can, and realize that this is a long-term commitment to weight loss.
Michelle would get that especially. There in Utah with the Simmons she has been SURROUNDED by high calorie deliciousness as gifts from helpful friends and neighbors.
Anyway, I just wanted to check in and update that I weighed in at 183.8 this morning, which is exactly 25 pounds down.
I also saw 182 on Saturday morning after a good gym session and before breakfast, so good things are ahead.
I am excited to see the 170's.
Just keep swimming!!

Jeanette: Mid-week update--last week of FEBRUARY!
Greetings!
This week I have done well. The weight continues to come off, albeit slowly. Monday I did the hill (dubbed the "hill from hell" by Sandy Rayborn), but it wasn't enough. Isn't that cool? The first time I did it I thought I might die. Now, I felt like I needed to do more. So I had her drop me off on Hill Road and I ran to the school. It was good!
Tuesday I was crazy pants and forgot my gym shoes!!! I was walking in the gym with my bag, and it felt suspiciously light. It was already late because of PLC, so I came home and did yardwork (blessed high 50 temps!) My tulips are coming up :)
Today (Wed) I had a meeting downtown and it was our last day of good weather. We got done early, so I went to the Greenbelt and ran FOUR MILES STRAIGHT! Four miles without stopping! For some people that's not much. And soon, I will be laughing at how little that is. But for me, right now, that's a lot. I was very proud! And then I took Ibuprofen.
Food has included: lots of green smoothies and toast for breakfast, and black beans and eggs. Lunches/dinners have been salads, egg salad in a pita, salad from Elk's Lodge, doc's chili and Shannon beans with applesauce. Snacks are apples and a few cashews.
Today after my run I saw 185.6. My goal is 184 by Sunday.
Just keep swimming!!!!!!!! In three weeks I will get to go to Arizona for Spring Break! YAY!!

Jeanette: End of Week Six
Well hello there. I'm sure you've been waiting anxiously to see how I fared this week on the scale after my big 20 pound victory over the Utah weekend....
I did great! I had a volleyball game on Thursday (we won--I think we're going to be competitive and do well this season!) Then Friday I worked hard at the gym. I ran 10 laps, lifted weights and did lunges, ran 10 more laps, did my weight routine again, and ran 5 more laps then finished with my weights. I am trying to combine strength training and cardio both.
Saturday my knee surgery knee was hurting from all the fun this week, so I took a break. I ate really healthy though--egg white/veggie omelet for breakfast, salad with chicken for lunch, and a green smoothie with toast for dinner.
As of this morning, I have lost 22 pounds! Here is proof and two photos of my progress.
JUST KEEP SWIMMING!!! Next week's goal: 184!

Jeanette: Mid-week update, 2.20.14
I did it! I weighed in at 188.8 (I also saw 188.6) after my trip to Utah. This is a tremendous personal victory. It marks exactly 20 pounds; yay! But it also was a testament to how I fought against all the yummy temptations on my trip. My family really worked hard to help me, and I am very grateful. Yay!
After that victory, I've done okay. Tuesday I ate a lunch provided at our AVID meeting consisting of salad, chips, and 1/2 a chicken and bean burrito. That might not have been the best. Then I ran 3.4 miles (almost without stopping, still working on that), so that was good.
Then Wednesday, I was so tired and hungry! I ate spaghetti squash and salad for lunch, but I had a long meeting after school and Young Women's that night. So, I didn't go to the gym. Then....I had refried bean/taco mix with green beans for dinner AND THEN I ate a bag of popcorn. Oy.
Ok, so I knew I overate. Also, I stayed up late (past 11) because I had another meeting AND I didn't work out (triple bad threat). But I was really sad to see that I was back up to 192 last night and 190.0 in the morning. I was hoping not to ever see the 190's again.
I guess I just have to remember this is a journey and to keep working hard. Today I ate a breakfast burrito and apple, spaghetti squash with salad and green beans, and lettuce wraps. I went to my volleyball game (we won!) Tomorrow I will eat well and work out at the gym.
Just keep swimming!!

Jeanette: President's Day Weekend Utah Update
Well hello. I'm back from my visit to Utah. It was fraught, I repeat, FRAUGHT with temptations that aren't around when I'm in my little house controlling every little thing that comes in the door. It started on the drive out...McDonalds, chips--cheesy Pringles and Cheetos (my favorite), chocolate chip cookies (my favorite!), gummy bears, white bread....and included homemade bread, chips and salsa, sugar cookies, M & M's, brownies, pudding, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, sourdough sandwiches, oh my gosh.
Well, that's mostly everything I didn't eat. Things I did right included packing my own food: low-fat wheat thins and cooked chicken pieces, apples, skim milk cheese sticks, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, and whole almonds.
I ran twice, both of which included uphill portions. I ate eggs and toast at breakfast and taco salad for lunch (I did have some chips, but tried to limit it). I ate some of the meatloaf and potatoes, but tried to fill up mostly with salad and green beans. I ate some of Val's homemade bread, but only a piece. I had 1/4 of the yummy sourdough sandwich and gave the rest away. I ate 10 Cheetos and 3 Pringles in the car today, but I said no to all sweets and packed my own salad with chicken for lunch/dinner. I did not eat out once.
Here's to seeing a good number in the 180's tomorrow!!! I hope, I hope, I hope. I really tried hard this weekend. I'm tired and hungry and grumpy, and my kitty is in a biting mood. Rawr.
This is me after my run in Santaquin President's Day morning. I ran up a hill and it was really beautiful, but I thought I might die. Can you tell?
And this is my motto. I cannot gain this weight back again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just keep swimming....Just keep swimming....
Sunday I had really hoped to see 192. I was 195.0 last week, and I had these hopes that I would somehow get into the 180's by the time I go to Utah Feb. 14. (That's a stretch, I know.)
So, I worked with the scale and fought it a bit....but I saw 192.8 for Sunday morning! Woo hoo! That's a net loss of 2.2 for the week. I'll take it.
I told myself all weekend that I could have popcorn on Sunday. Popsecret Homestyle popcorn with a green smoothie is one delicious treat. It is, however, very hard to know how many calories is actually in the bag of popcorn. It's like rocket science. In the end, I decided it was probably about 350 calories. I have no idea if that's right or not.
So I ate a bag of the most delicious popcorn ever on Sunday! Which was good, because I cried a little (mostly because I'm hormonal and hungry--a bad combination) when I had to say no to the most delicious looking chocolate cake and sugar cookies in Relief Society. Seriously. Then, not to lie, I cried a little when I got to eat my popcorn.
The Relief Society cake looked kind of like this. Only it had a pink layer of yum in the middle and fudgier delicouser frosting on top. Kill me now!
Eatingwise the last couple days:
Breakfasts
egg white omelet with tons of veggies
1 cup vegetable soup with 1 toast
1 egg with 1 Tbsp ff mayo and veggies in a whole wheat pita with an apple
Lunches
bean burrito from freezer, applesauce
salad with corn, black beans, salsa, and bbq chicken
spaghetti squash/sauce and peas
Dinners
Lentil soup and salad
popcorn and a smoothie
salad and Doc's chili
Exercise
treadmill 30 min, elliptical, bike (almost 1 hour of cardio)
rest
jogged Meridian to Linder roads plus more! (close to 3 miles?) nice weather :)
BTW: I was 192.0 this morning and 191.4 after running outside today. YAY! I'm hungry.

Jeanette: First Full Week of February!
Well.....I am trying hard to "just keep going" even though I lost the contest last week...and it's hard! Honestly, some days I feel great and it's okay, but other days I want to eat everything in the house, including my kitty (with bbq sauce and fries). Just kidding...but seriously.
To combat it, this is what I keep thinking:
On the plus side, I am getting stronger. I am running longer, lifting more easily, and not hurting as much after working out. I also can tell I've lost almost 15 pounds, and so can others. That's fun. I am wearing my smaller pants.
But I am not even into the 180's yet! I'm not even back to the number I saw this summer!! I have a really long ways to go. I think the weather might be part of the problem. It has been unseasonably cold and snowy and yucky outside. I want to exercise outside some days and not have to go to the gym everyday!! I wish I could see the sun more. I keep thinking I will be fit when it's warm. And basically, it's never going to be warm.
Well anyway. Here's what I've been eating besides kitties and groundhogs:
Breakfasts:
green smoothie and toast
breakfast burrito
1/2 cup brown beans and 1 stuffed Poblano pepper concoction
Lunches:
Salad....and chicken
Salad......and Shannon beans
also lettuce wraps
Dinners:
Salad....and chicken (and bbq sauce and black beans)
Lettuce wraps (and peas)
Spaghetti squash and applesauce
Exercise:
30 min treadmill (up to 7.5)
running on the indoor track
weights
rowing machine
stair-stepper
lots of stuff at the gym :)
Just keep swimming! Jeanette...out.

Victory Speech
Well, I really didn't expect to win...I really didn't.
1. I attribute my win to an unexpected poopy in the toilet first thing Sunday morning.
2. I'd like to thank some lady named "Heather" who inspired me with an article about poop.
3. I guess I'd also like to thank Basha's grocery store for being so darn far away from my house...maybe that 6 mile walk on Saturday did something good (I think it mostly got the poopy generated for Sunday morning to which I attribute the win).

Two Secrets to Fat Loss: Sleep and POOP
Ok. I am going to give you all my nutrition secrets. People come to me for “weight loss”, however you CAN NOT lose weight until you: 1. Sleep through the night without getting up to urinate. 2. Wake up with an urge for a bowel movement or have one within an hour of waking and/or two bowel movements a day. SLEEP: It doesn’t matter how much water you drink prior to bedtime, of course be a bit realistic, your bladder is big enough to hold water through the entire night. Your REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is THE most important aspect of a healthy life. Your body needs to restore, recovery, rebuild and re-energize and if you wake up in the middle of the night you are interrupting this process. Most people wake up exhausted every morning, and grab their cup of coffee for energy. Please email me for my hand out to support you with conscious tips to restore your natural sleep patterns. POOP: Everyone’s favorite subject because everyone does it. To lose weight you HAVE to poop. Fat doesn’t just fall off your gut, it has to come out. The ideal bowel movement is first thing in the morning, formed, solid, floating, dark, complete, and doesn’t smell too much. The other ideal is experiencing this type of bowel movement after every meal. Yes, this is an ideal goal for all. If you experience constipation or diarrhea, you have the tendency to be chronically tired and gain weight easily. You do not have to live like this, please visit a health care practitioner or give us a call. Sleep tight & poop right, Heather

Jeanette: Sunday, 2.2
Today was fast Sunday. After church before I ate, I actually saw 194.4 on the scale, which is a total weight loss of 14.4 pounds. WOW! And, there were six people at church who asked me if I got a haircut or color today. Funny, huh? Funny because that is what usually happens first when your weight loss starts to become obvious. People can tell something looks different, but they aren't sure what it is....so you get a lot of, "Did you get a haircut?" questions. I was glad to have a lot of those today because I know I'm losing weight. Here, I'll take a picture.
Does my hair look that different? Or is it that I'm getting SKINNIER??
After church, I told myself I could eat. Then I will continue dieting and exercising big time tomorrow. So....
I ate:
2 bowls of cabbage salad
3 handfuls of chocolate chips
12 wheat thins with cheese from Amsterdam
1 bag popcorn
1 smoothie
Well, I ate a lot today, but here's to starting again fresh tomorrow. I need to win Round 3!
Jeanette, OUT.

Round 2: And the winner is......
Sunday; Feb. 2, 2014:
Groundhog Day (six more weeks of winter, except for in Arizona)
Superbowl Sunday (Seattle vs. Denver. Hope they have good commercials)
Fast Sunday (starve, then eat like a piggy after church)
Round 2 Weigh-In Day
As you can see, it is a very busy day this 2 of February 2014. The biggest question--the most important event, the competition that the world is waiting for and watching--WHO WILL WIN THE ROUND 2 WEIGH IN? Jeanette-Bring-It-On-Griggs or Michelle-Kick-Some-Rear-End-Du Bois?
Over the last two weeks, Jeanette lost 4.6 pounds for a Round 2 percentage of weight loss of 2.3. Excellent work! Total weight lost so far: 13.8 pounds. Outstanding!
Unfortunately for Jeanette, her weight loss wasn't quite enough to secure the victory this round. Michelle's persistent starvation, steely determination, and crazy long walks earned her the title of the "Biggest Loser, Round 2"! (See her victory speech in a later post.) Michelle lost 5.4 pounds for a Round 2 percentage of weight loss of 2.8. Fantastic! Total weight lost so far: 13.4 pounds. Truly superb!!
Round 3 will be the last competitive round, and then Jeanette and Michelle will start working together. Both girls have done a phenomenal job so far. Congratulations on your victory Michelle!

Jeanette: Sat. 2.1
Well hello there. Happy Saturday! Ah, Saturday. Wish I was in warm weather, but at least the inversion has passed and I got to go for a run outside today.
Breakfast:
1 egg/egg whites and tons of veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, red/green pepper, zucchini, cilantro, spinach) omelet
Lunch:
Spaghetti squash with 1 cup spaghetti sauce (with ground turkey, lentil/barley mix, and tons of veggies)
Salad (cucumber, feta, tomato, carrot, homemade ranch and a few croutons)
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
Dinner:
1 green smoothie (including spinach and cucumber)
1 wheat toast with almond butter
5 wheat thins with almond butter
Exercise:
I ran the whole length of the path and around the park from Meridian to Linder roads. I think it's about 2 miles (maybe a little more). Don't know if I've ever done that. Yay Me!
I am reminding myself to be patient and KEEP GOING, because even though I am seeing great numbers that keep dropping on the scale, I still see a lot of fat in the mirror.
Be patient. KEEP GOING!!

Jeanette's Last Week of January
I dropped the ball on posting what I ate this week :( I'm sorry!!
For breakfasts this week I ate a lot of green smoothies and toast with almond butter. Twice when I was driving to work drinking my smoothie I reflected on how good my body felt drinking that healthy deliciousness! Also, that breakfast can usually last me until lunch. I also ate frittata with salsa AND...I had dinner at Emily's on Sunday night. We had salad, baked chicken, quinoa, and broccoli. It was fantastic! Then, Emily gave me two Poblano peppers from her Bountiful Basket. (She doesn't digest peppers well.) I wasn't sure what to do with them, but I concocted this (see below). I baked the peppers and filled them with a combination of ground turkey, lentil/barley mix, quinoa, corn, and salsa. I sprinkled a tiny bit of cheese on the top. They are great! I had one for breakfast this week too.
For lunches...well, on Tuesday I had jury duty so I pretty much skipped lunch. Then I went to the gym and worked out--and saw an amazing number (that I haven't seen since) when I weighed! For lunches this week I ate a lot of salad: salad with chicken twice, salad with lentil soup, and salad with doc's chili. What can I say? I love salad.
For dinners, I usually eat the same things I have at lunch. One night this week, I ate a Bocca black bean burger in a thin bun with a small potato (baked) and broccoli. I also (on Wednesday) was feeling depressed about life and the inversion, and I ate a bag of popcorn, salad, AND a handful of chocolate chips. Yikes!
Sometimes I eat a couple of nuts (almonds or cashews) if I'm really hungry after the gym and before dinner. Just sayin.
Today (Friday), I ate:
1 green smoothie with 1 toast with almond butter
1 apple
1 salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, feta) with yogurt dressing and 1 cup lentil soup
1/2 cup homemade refried beans with 1 Poblano pepper concoction and salad with balsamic vinegar
Exercise:
Monday-- Cardio at the gym including 30 minutes on treadmill, bike, and elliptical
Tuesday-- Treadmill at gym, a few weights
Wednesday-- Break
Thursday-- Hiked Quail Ridge and jogged down (36 min)
Friday-- Cardio/weights at the gym (including 30 min on treadmill)
I have not eaten after 6 PM this week, and did not indulge at Book Club or mutual.
On a positive note from all this--look how cute my birthday jacket is starting to look! I know I have a long way to go, but.... JUST KEEP GOING!!!
Here's to hoping I can beat Michelle Sunday. She is a fierce competitor.

Week 3 Update: Slow and Steady Progress
Today (Sunday, January 26) marks the end of Week 3 for the intrepid Lean-and-not-so-Mean-2014 adventurers.
Both contestants have lost 10 pounds in 20 days, which is a tremendous and exciting feat. This week:
Michelle's starvation diet and sheer willpower power pushed her over the 190's hump that was holding her back. She hit 189.6 for a weight loss of 2 pounds this week---total weight loss to date: exactly 10 pounds. Sweet!!
Jeanette's weight loss slowed considerably this week, but she didn't stop and neither did it! She weighed in at 198.4 for a weight loss of 1.2 this week---total weight loss to date: 10.2 pounds. Excellent!!
Keep up the good work girls, and remember....next week's weigh in marks the official end of Round 2. May the biggest loser win!
